Park Host Job Description
Frequently Asked Questions About the Position
What is the compensation for the position?
The park host comes with a salary of $500 for an average of 30-35 hours of work per week. We pay for three (3) weeks of work per month and you get one (1) week per month as unpaid time off. The selected applicant will be paid out as a 1099 contractor. If you are working as a family or as a couple, this allows you to determine who performs which campground tasks as long as the job gets done.
The applicant and their family will also recieve a campsite for the time they are on property at no cost (valued at $575 per month); a $150 per month campground credit that can be used to pay your electricity used or for any camp store purchases. You will also get free unlimited ice; discounts on items in the campground store; free access to on-site laundry; and free use of campground Wi-Fi.
What type of campsite is available for the Park Host?
We have designated site C7 as the Park Host campsite for this season. The site includes water, sewer and a 50-amp electric hookup. We are willing to consider placing our host at an alternate seasonal designated campsite depending if the sites are available. All of our campsite options for hosts can easily accomodate a 45 foot camping unit, but some might have limited parking for additional vehicles depending on rig size. View our Campground Map.
How does time off work?
Time off is unpaid, but generous so that you have time to recharge and/or explore the Minnesota Iron Range. We allow up to 7 days a month off provided that it is not during an event or holiday weekend. August already has 3 of the 4 weekends booked with special events so only August 20-27 is available for time off this season. Generally, there is at least one calendar week and weekend where we do not have high customer demands that would require our Park Host to be on property. We will provide a campground event and holiday calendar to all position finalists prior any offer being extended.
Do I need to be on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?
NO! The owner of the campground also lives on site and is there as backup support for staff. While the Park Host is the primary individual responsible for guest check-ins and housekeeping tasks, the owner is available most days to make sure you have the time you need to run errands, buy groceries and all the other things you will need to balance work and life. We do, however, require the Park Host to be on property overnight on all days when they are not on vacation/time off.
Our camper is an older model. Do you have restrictions on how old of a camper can be used as a Park Host?
We don't have restrictions on the specific age of RVs, but we do require that owners have current tags/tabs as well as insurance and they are in good working order. Our customers have a wide range of RVs. We welcome them all.
What is your policy on pets?
We are definitely dog and pet friendly, however for the safety of everyone at the campground, we require all pets be on a leash or in a kennel at all times. We allow our Park Host to install semi-permanent kennel panels at their expense if they desire to do so. The owner has two extremely friendly Golden Retrievers and they love going for walks in the wooded areas of the campground or the nearby Mesabi Trail. Our campground office is designed with dogs in mind so you can bring your furry to the office with you as you wish - we have a built in barrier between staff area and guest areas.
Where are the closest stores for shopping and getting medications, etc.?
Our campground is located just outside the City of Gilbert, MN. We have a Circle K gas station in town about 1 mile away as well as 2 restaurants, a liquor store, and several bars. The closest shopping area is 8 miles away in Virginia. They have most of the big box stores like Target, Walmart, Menards, Tractor Supply Co., Walgreens and two Super One grocery stores. Most of the fast food options like McDonalds, KFC, Arby's, Taco Bell, Hardies, etc. and several other restaurants are also in Virginia.
If I need parts or service for my camper, how far is the closest repair/service center?
The nearest RV supply stores are about 45 minutes away in Duluth or Hermantown. Bullyan RV is a family run dealership and has a good service department. We also have the name of a mobile RV service person who can come out to our campground for mobile repairs.
What computer system do you use and will I recieve any training?
West Forty uses Firefly reservations system to manage our guest bookings and information. You will receive computer-based and in-person training during the first week you are on property and you will be paid for all training time. You will get to determine how many people in your family receive access to operate the system -- a perfect situation for couples who want flexibility to share tasks! We believe the best way to set up our staff for success is to invest in their training so you have the tools you need to be great! That includes an orientation of the campground and the opportunity to assist the owner in regular tasks before doing things on your own. We also provide our Park Host with a semi-structured daily task list to help guide your work so you can schedule your days.
What other things do I need to know?
We require the final applicant and any family members over the age of 18 to go through a background check that will be conducted by the Gilbert Police Department. Background checks must be completed prior to our sending you a contract for the season.
